Bread And Butter Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    8 small onions, chopped
    1 gal. cucumbers, peeled and sliced thin
    5 c. sugar
    5 c. vinegar
    1/2 tsp. turmeric
    1/2 tsp. ground cloves
    2 tsp. celery seed
    2 Tbsp. mustard seed
Preparation
    In a large container, put cukes and onions; add 1/2 cup salt. Cover with ice cubes and refrigerate for 3 hours.
    Drain off liquid; set aside.
    Combine rest of ingredients in a large pan. Heat and add onions and cukes.
    Bring to a boil.
    Put in hot jars and seal.
