Ingredients

4 1/3 c. sifted flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 tsp. ground ginger
3/4 tsp. ground cloves
1/4 tsp. allspice
3/4 c. shortening
3/4 c. sugar
1 c. light molasses
1 tbsp. rum or vanilla extract
1/3 c. water
Preparation

Mix and sift flour. soda, salt and spices.
Cream shortening and sugar.
Add molasses and extract to shortening mixture.
Add the flour mixture and the flour , alternately, in small amounts, beating until well blended.
Wrap dough in foil; chill overnight.
