Candied Yams - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    6 medium yams
    3 c. sugar
    1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
    6 c. boiling water
    1/2 tsp. nutmeg
    4 Tbsp. butter
    1/2 tsp. ground cloves
Preparation
    Wash yams.
    Cover and bring to boil.
    Boil for about 5 minutes.
    Drain, peel and slice in half lengthwise.
    Place the slices in a heavy 4-quart saucepan.
    Add the sugar, spices, butter and boiling water.
    Cook, uncovered, for 1 hour until the syrup has thickened and almost cooked away.
    Turn the yams occasionally during the last half of the cooking time but do not stir.
    Serve hot.
