Kosher Style Dill Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 peck 4 to 5-inch cucumbers
    1 1/2 c. salt
    3 large pieces fresh dill or 1 Tbsp. dill seed (to each 1/2 gal.)
    1 hot pepper
    3 pt. cider vinegar
    4 1/2 qt. boiling water
    4 small garlic
    1 1/2 tsp. alum
Preparation
    Pack cucumbers in jar and pour over, after boiling, vinegar and water.
    Put in each jar dill, grape leaves, garlic, pepper and alum.
    Cap and seal.
    (Green tomatoes, bell pepper and sliced onions may be added too.)
