Carolina Christmas Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 1/2 c. applesauce
    2 c. sugar
    2 1/2 c. sifted plain flour
    1/2 tsp. each: cinnamon, cloves and allspice
    1 c. raisins
    1 c. walnuts
    1/2 c. boiling water
    1/4 to 1/2 c. candied fruit
    1 egg
    1 c. shortening
    2 1/2 tsp. soda
    1/4 tsp. salt
    candied pineapple rings, cherries and pecan halves to decorate top
Preparation
    Cream shortening.
    Add sugar gradually.
    Add well beaten egg and applesauce (Use a little of the flour to dredge fruit and nuts).
    Sift remaining flour mixture alternately with the water to the creamed mixture.
    Add flour, raisins and nuts.
