Split Pea Soup - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 lb. green split peas
    1 medium onion
    2 c. diced ham
    3 qt. water
    1 raw carrot, grated
    2 tsp. salt
    1 raw potato, diced (optional)
Preparation
    Sort peas.
    Place in kettle with water and salt; bring to a boil.
    Add remaining ingredients and simmer for 2 to 3 hours.
    Add water from time to time as necessary.
