Dill Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    3 qt. water
    1 qt. vinegar
    1 c. coarse salt
    1 garlic clove
    1/2 carrot
    1 piece onion
    dill
    alum
Preparation
    Put dill, onion, garlic, carrot and alum in jar.
    Boil liquid; pour hot over pickles.
    Seal.
    Put in boiling water and turn off heat.
    Leave in hot water until pickles turn color.
    Makes about 8 quarts.
