Bread And Butter Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 gallon cukes
    8 small onions
    1/2 cup salt
    2 red peppers
    2 green peppers
    5 cups sugar
    1 1/2 tsp. turmeric
    1/2 scant tsp. cloves
    2 Tbsp. mustard seed
    1 Tbsp. celery seed
    4 cups vinegar
    1 cup water
Preparation
    Wash and slice cukes very thin.
    Slice in onions.
    Mix in salt. Add one quart very cold water, let stand 3 hours.
    Drain well and add pickling syrup of 5 cups of sugar, 1 1/2 teaspoons turmeric, 1/2 scant teaspoon cloves, 2 tablespoons mustard seed, 1 tablespoon celery seed, 4 cups vinegar, 1 cup water.
    Scald but do not boil. Seal in jars.
