Bake at 375\u00b0 for 10 to 12 minutes.
Blend shortening, brown sugar and granulated sugar in a large bowl.
Beat in vanilla and eggs.
Sift next 3 dry ingredients together.
Add to sugar and egg mixture, blending well.
Stir in 1/2 cup M&M's candies.
Blend well.
Drop from teaspoon on greased cookie sheet.
Decorate with remaining M&M's.

Sift flour, soda and salt.
Mix with Crisco and sugar.
Add 1 cup of M&M's.
(I use the browns and save the colorful ones for decorations.) Drop by teaspoonfuls to greased cookie sheet. Decorate the top with the remaining M&M's.

Preheat oven to 200\u00b0. Line baking sheet with parchment paper. In a medium bowl, beat egg whites and cream of tartar until foamy. Slowly beat in sugar until stiff, shiny peaks form. Fold in M&M's bits. Spoon 12 (2 to 2 1/2-inch wide) mounds onto prepared baking sheet. Garnish with M&M's bits, if desired, dotting tops. Bake 2 hours until dry and crisp. Turn off oven; let cool in oven 2 hours. Makes 12 meringues.
