Coal Flowers

Place a piece of coal in a deep glass dish.
Pour the liquid around the coal, but not on it.
Dot the coal with the red ink. Do not move the dish and coral-like crystals will soon appear and spread over the coal.
They will grow to a height of about 1/2-inch in a sponge-like appearance and will last for weeks.

Magic Out Of A Lump Of Coal

In a glass or plastic bowl, put pieces of coal, coke, porous brick, tile, small pieces of broken cement or sponge.
To prevent staining, place bowl on a protected surface.
Mix together 2 tablespoons water, 2 tablespoons table salt and 2 tablespoons liquid bluing, then pour this over the coal or other contents of the bowl; let stand overnight.
Next morning, sprinkle 2 more tablespoons salt over the base.

Mix water, salt, bluing and ammonia; stir until salt dissolves.
Pour over coal.

Old-Fashioned Coal Flower

Pennsylvania Coal Region Barbecue

Crumble the ground beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion; cook and stir until meat is no longer pink. Drain excess grease, and stir in the vinegar, brown sugar, mustard, ketchup, salt and pepper. Simmer over medium heat for about 15 minutes. Serve on buns.

Coal Region Boilo

In a large pot over medium heat, mix the water with honey, and stir to combine. Stir in the orange and lemon quarters, raisins, cinnamon sticks, caraway seeds, allspice berries, and cloves, and bring mixture to a boil. Reduce heat to a simmer, and cook, stirring occasionally, for 30 minutes. Remove from heat, and strain the liquid into a large pot. Allow to cool for a few minutes.
Slowly pour the grain alcohol into the honey mixture, and stir to combine. Pour into bottles, and cap; refrigerate until use. Serve gently warmed in shot glasses ...

Depression Plant(Not To Be Eaten)

Put coal in glass dish, about 8-inches in diameter.
Pour remaining ingredients over coal.
Do not stir or move the dish around.
Dot the coal with the ink or food coloring.
Within a few hours your coal will be covered with beautiful growths that somewhat resemble coral and will greatly change from day to day. This is very interesting to watch as it grows so much faster than other plants.
It never fails.

Depression Plant

Put several pieces of coal or charcoal in deep dish (glass) or fishbowl.
Around the coal, but not on top of it, pour water, salt, household blueing, ammonia and iodine or red ink.
Do not stir these ingredients or move bowl anymore than necessary.
In few days, beautiful, mossy crystal growth will appear.
For a week or 2 add salt and water as the liquid disappears.
After the crystals cover coal completely, you needn't add any more water.

Crystal Garden

Place the water, bluing, salt and ammonia in a jar and stir thoroughly.
Set the coal or briquettes in an old pie tin in a single layer.
Pour the solution on top.
Put several drops of food coloring on coal (or briquettes), leaving some areas plain. Set it in a quiet place.
The next day, you will see gorgeous crystal-formations.

Grow Coal Flowers

Mix and stir the ingredients.
Half submerge a piece of coal or an old piece of brick.
Watch it carefully as it grows.
You may try dotting the coal or brick with food coloring for different colors.
This is a very old recipe.
It is something we used to do.

Chemical Garden

Put coal and a little water in a bowl.
Mix salt, water, bluing and ammonia.
Add food color by drops.
Add slowly to the coal and water!

Pour all ingredients over coal in order given.
Watch it grow. Red stuff can be food coloring or merthiolate.

Winter Garden

Dissolve together.
Pour this mixture over a piece of coal in a saucer.
With a medicine dropper, drop a few drops of food coloring over the mixture.
Put the garden in a place where it won't be disturbed.
In a few hours tiny crystals will begin to form.
They will grow for a few days.

Put a few drops of food coloring over the salt (any color).
Watch it grow.

Chemical Garden

Mix bluing, water and salt.
Add ammonia.
Mix well and pour slowly over 3 or 4 small rocks, clinkers or coal in an old pie pan.
Crystals start to grow very soon and will continue as long as the liquid stays.
If you want a little color, add a few drops of food coloring to the rocks.
Set the pan where you can watch it daily.
