Ingredients
-
1 1/2 tbsp vegetable oil or ghee
1 None onion, finely chopped
4 cloves garlic, crushed
1 1/2 tsp ground cumin
1 1/2 tsp garam masala
1/2 tsp turmeric
1 pinch cayenne pepper (optional)
1 1/2 cups yellow split peas, rinsed
2 None onions, thinly sliced
1/4 cup coarsely chopped fresh cilantro
Preparation
-
Heat half the oil in a medium saucepan on medium heat. Cook the onion and garlic, stirring, until the onion softens. Add the spices and cook, stirring, until fragrant.
Add the split peas and 4 cups water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low; simmer, uncovered, for about 40 mins or until the split peas are tender. Season to taste.
Heat the remaining oil in a medium skillet on medium heat. Cook the sliced onions, stirring occasionally, for about 5 mins or until browned.
Serve the spicy dahl topped with the onion mixture and cilantro.
