Barbara Frietchie Pie - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 single crust pastry dough (store bought or your own recipe)
    3/4 cup granulated sugar
    1/2 cup heavy cream or 1/2 cup evaporated milk
    3/4 cup brown sugar
    2 egg yolks, beaten
    2 tablespoons butter
    1/2 teaspoon vanilla
    1/8 teaspoon salt
    2 egg whites, beaten
    grated nutmeg
Preparation
    Preheat oven to 425\u00b0F.
    Line the pie pan with pastry.
    cook sugars, cream, egg yolks and butter in a double boiler until thickened, stirring constantly to prevent scorching.
    Remove from heat, add vanilla, salt and beaten egg whites.
    Pour into unbaked pastry shell, sprinkle with nutmeg and bake at 425F for 10 minutes, reduce to 300F and bake about 45 minutes longer or until a knife comes out clean when inserted in center.
    Serve very cold.
