1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. water
1/2 c. shortening
1 1/4 c. sugar
2 egg yolks
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 c. milk
2 1/2 c. flour
3 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
2 egg whites
Preparation

Melt 1/2 cup sugar in skillet until golden; add 1/2 cup water and cook until thick.
Set aside.
Cream together 1/2 cup shortening, 1 1/4 cups sugar, 2 egg yolks and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. Mix together 2 1/2 cups flour, 3 teaspoons baking powder and 1/4 teaspoon salt and add to creamed mixture, alternating with 1 cup milk.
Add sugar syrup and beat thoroughly.
Beat 2 egg whites until stiff and fold into batter.
Bake at 350\u00b0 for 25 minutes. Frost with a brown sugar fudge icing.
