Chipmunk Bars Or Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. boiling water
    1 c. chopped dates
    1 3/4 c. sifted flour
    1/4 c. cocoa
    1 tsp. baking soda
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1 c. shortening (half butter or margarine)
    1 c. sugar
    2 eggs, beaten
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1/2 c. chopped nuts
    1 c. semi-sweet chocolate chips
Preparation
    Pour boiling water over dates; let cool.
    Measure flour (sifted), cocoa, soda and salt and sift together.
    Cream shortening; add sugar gradually, creaming until light and fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla; beat well.
    Then add flour alternately with date mixture, blending after each addition.
