Rhubarb Cake With Custard Sauce - cooking recipe

1 1/2 c. brown sugar
`1/2 c. shortening
1 egg
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. soda
1 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. vanilla
2 c. flour
1 1/2 c. rhubarb, cut up
Preparation

Cream shortening and brown sugar together.
Add egg and mix well.
Combine flour, soda and salt and add alternately with buttermilk.
By hand, add vanilla and cut up rhubarb.
Mix well. Put in a greased 13 x 9-inch pan.
Bake at 350\u00b0 for 35 to 40 minutes.
Can sprinkle 1/2 cup sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon and 1/2 cup nuts over batter before baking or omit topping and serve with Custard Sauce.
