Abraham Lincoln'S Stewed Apples - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    2 1/2 lb. apples
    2/3 c. sugar
    2/3 c. white wine
    1/2 Tbsp. lemon juice
    3 Tbsp. butter
    2/3 c. water
    1 small piece lemon peel
Preparation
    Peel and core the apples.
    Cut in thick slices and saute in the butter, about 3 or 4 minutes.
    Add the remaining ingredients. Cover and cook slowly until tender.
