New England Clam Chowder - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 medium onion, chopped
    2 Tbsp. butter or margarine
    salt and pepper to taste
    milk
    8 medium potatoes, diced in 1/2-inch cubes
    1 can whole baby clams
    2 Tbsp. butter (optional)
Preparation
    In 3-quart pot on medium-low heat, saute onions in 2 tablespoons butter or margarine until tender.
    Add diced potatoes, the juice from the can of clams and just enough water to come within 1/2 an inch of the top of the potatoes.
    Add salt and pepper to taste.
