Old-Fashioned Beef Stew - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    2 Tbsp. fat
    2 lb. stew meat
    1 large onion, sliced
    1 clove garlic on toothpick (so it can be retrieved)
    4 c. boiling water
    1 Tbsp. salt
    1 Tbsp. lemon juice
    1 Tbsp. sugar
    1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
    1/2 tsp. pepper
    1/2 tsp. paprika
    1 or 2 bay leaves (remove before serving)
    dash of allspice or cloves
    6 carrots, sliced
    6 medium potatoes, cut in 2-inch cubes
    1/2 c. cold water
    1/4 c. flour
Preparation
    Brown meat in fat about 20 minutes.
    Add boiling water and rest of ingredients except carrots, potatoes, 1/2 cup water and 1/4 cup flour.
    Simmer about 2 hours until meat is thoroughly done and tender.
    Add carrots and potatoes.
    Cook until tender.
    Mix cold water and flour.
    Remove bay leaves and garlic.
    Make a well in center of meat and potatoes and pour in water and flour mixture to thicken.
    Cook gently about 5 minutes.
