Busy Ladies Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 gal. cucumbers, sliced 1/2-inch thick
    4 Tbsp. pickling salt
    4 Tbsp. pickling spices
    4 Tbsp. powdered alum
    1 gal. white vinegar
    8 c. sugar
Preparation
    Pack cucumbers tightly almost to top of gallon glass jar. Add salt, spices and alum. Cover with white vinegar. Let set 6 weeks. Rinse cucumbers and jar to remove spices. Layer cucumbers with a layer of sugar (1 cup at a time) until 8 cups of sugar have been used. Fill to top of jar. Shake until liquid forms. Keep at room temperature. May be put in the refrigerator to chill before serving.
