Takuwan - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    3/4 c. vinegar
    1 1/2 c. sugar
    3 Tbsp. salt
    3 to 4 turnips, peeled
    1 red pepper (optional)
Preparation
    Combine vinegar, sugar and salt in saucepan.
    Simmer over medium heat until sugar and salt dissolve.
    Cool slightly; slice turnips and put in jar.
    Add hot liquid and pepper.
    Let stand at room temperature 1 to 2 days (taste).
