Ingredients

1 1/2 c. sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
4 eggs
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. flour or 1/4 c. cornstarch
3 c. milk
3 Tbsp. butter or margarine
4 sq. unsweetened chocolate
Preparation

In a medium saucepan, combine sugar, flour or cornstarch and salt.
Gradually add milk and unsweetened chocolate.
Cook and stir over medium heat until thickened and bubbly.
Reduce heat and cook and stir 2 minutes.
Separate egg yolks and whites; set whites aside for meringue.
Beat yolks, then gradually stir 1 cup of the hot mixture into yolks.
Return egg mixture to pan; bring to a gentle boil.
Cook and stir 2 minutes more.
Remove from heat.
Stir in butter and vanilla.
Pour hot filling in baked pastry shell.
Spread meringue over hot filling.
Bake at 350\u00b0 for 12 to 15 minutes.
