Ham And Cheese Strata - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1/3 c. butter, softened
    1 clove garlic, crushed
    12 slices white bread, crusts removed
    2 c. Cheddar cheese, shredded
    1 1/2 c. diced ham, cooked
    1/2 onion, chopped
    1 tsp. salt
    dash of red pepper
    6 eggs
    2 c. milk
    1 c. chopped mushroom (optional)
    1 box chopped frozen broccoli (optional)
Preparation
    Mix butter and garlic.
    Spread over each slice of bread.
    Cut each slice of bread in cubes.
    Press into bottom of 8 x 8 x 2-inch pan with buttered sides down.
    Mix remaining ingredients; spread evenly in dish.
    Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours (or you may fix this recipe in the evening and let it refrigerate overnight).
    Bake, uncovered, in 325\u00b0 oven until knife inserted in center comes out clean, about 1 1/4 hours. Let stand 10 minutes before cutting.
    Makes 6 servings, 475 calories per serving.
