Ingredients

1 tablespoon shortening
1 tablespoon salt
2 teaspoons sugar
2 cups water
1 package dry yeast
6 cups flour
Preparation

Put shortening, salt, and sugar into large mixing bowl.
Add 1 cup boiling water; cool to lukewarm by adding 1 cup cold water. Blend in yeast and add flour, 2 cups at a time.
Knead and place in bowl to rise.
Punch down and let rise again.
Turn out on floured board; divide into two loaves.
Slash tops and place on cookie sheet.
Let rise until double.
Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes, then reduce heat to 350 degrees and bake for another 35 to 45 minutes.
