Good Brown Beef Stew - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    2 lb. boneless beef chuck, cut in 1-inch cubes
    4 c. hot water
    1 tsp. lemon juice
    1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
    1 clove garlic, minced
    1 medium onion, sliced
    1 small bay leaf
    2 tsp. salt
    1/4 tsp. pepper
    pinch of allspice
    1 tsp. sugar
    6 carrots, quartered
    8 small onions
    3 potatoes, peeled and cut in eighths
Preparation
    Brown meat thoroughly in 1 or 2 tablespoons fat in a large, heavy kettle.
    Add remaining ingredients, except carrots, whole onions and potatoes; simmer 1 hour and 45 minutes, adding water, if necessary.
    Add carrots, onions and potatoes and cook 30 minutes until vegetables are tender.
    Thicken liquid.
