Italian Anise Cakes - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 1/2 c. sugar
    6 eggs
    5 c. sifted flour
    1 c. shortening
    2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
    1 tsp. salt
    3 to 4 drops anise oil
    1 c. chopped walnuts or dates or raisins (optional)
Preparation
    Beat eggs; add sugar and shortening.
    Add flour, baking powder, salt and anise oil.
    Mix well.
    Shape into small loaves; pat with flour and let it stand for 1 to 2 hours.
    Bake at 350\u00b0 for 20 minutes or until lightly browned; cool.
    Cut into 2-inch slices and return to oven for 10 minutes longer.
    May be iced with colorful sprinkles.
