Chunk Sweet Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    7 lb. cucumbers
    1 c. pickling salt
    1 gal. water
    1 c. vinegar
    2 Tbsp. alum
    3 c. sugar
    3 c. vinegar
    whole mix pickle spices tied in bag
Preparation
    Wash cucumbers in cold water and slice 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick. Soak for 3 days in salt brine strong enough to hold an egg (pickling salt and 1 gallon water).
    Pour off salt water, then soak for 3 days in clear water, changing water every day.
    Remove from water; put in kettle and add vinegar, alum and enough hot water to cover.
    Simmer for 1 hour; gently stir several times.
    Drain.
