Ingredients

1/2 c. sugar
1/4 c. water
1 1/2 c. white sugar
1 c. cold water
1/2 c. butter
3 eggs, separated
2 c. flour
2 tsp. baking powder
vanilla to taste
Preparation

Burn 1/2 c. sugar until liquidized.
Add 1/4 c. water, stirring well.
Set aside.
Cream 1 1/2 c. white sugar, cold water, butter, egg yolks, and half of the flour.
Beat batter for 5 minutes.
Add egg whites, well beaten to other half of flour with baking powder.
Combine with batter and flavor with vanilla. Add burnt sugar.
Cook in a moderate oven.
