Applesauce Fruitcake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    2 c. brown sugar
    1 c. shortening
    3 eggs
    1 tsp. salt
    2 c. applesauce
    1/2 tsp. baking soda
    1 to 2 lb. candied fruit*
    1 c. chopped nuts
    2 1/2 c. flour
    3 tsp. baking powder
    1 tsp. cinnamon
    1 tsp. nutmeg
    1 tsp. allspice
    1/2 tsp. cloves
Preparation
    Cream shortening, sugar and eggs.
    Stir soda into applesauce until foaming.
    Add to creamed mixture.
    Sift flour and spices; add to mixture.
    Fold in candied fruit and walnuts.
    Line loaf pans with brown paper, then wax paper.
    Pour fruitcake mixture into 2 (12 x 3 1/2-inch) pans.
    Bake in a 350\u00b0 oven for about 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 hours or until toothpick comes out clean.
    Remove from pans and immediately peel off wax paper.
    Cool completely on racks.
    Put in foil wrapping and place in freezer several days (or longer).
    While still firm, slice as desired.
