Christmas Egg Nog - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1/2 c. sugar
    6 eggs, separated
    1 qt. milk, scalded
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1 c. cream
    2 tsp. vanilla
    nutmeg
    1 c. rum (optional)
Preparation
    Beat 1/4 cup sugar into egg yolks; stir in milk.
    Slowly cook over hot water until mixture coats spoon, stirring constantly. Chill.
    Add salt to egg whites and beat stiff.
    While beating, add remaining 1/4 cup sugar gradually.
    Fold in egg whites.
    Whip the cream into the mixture separately.
    Add vanilla.
    Chill several hours.
    Serve with nutmeg.
