Old-Timey Scalloped Tomatoes - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    3 c. home canned or store bought tomatoes
    1/4 c. butter
    3 c. medium coarse stale (but not dry) bread crumbs
    3 Tbsp. sugar
    1 tsp. salt
    1/8 tsp. pepper
    ground allspice
Preparation
    Heat tomatoes and butter in a saucepan over moderate heat just until butter melts.
    Mix in crumbs, sugar, salt and pepper.
    Spoon into buttered 9 x 9 x 2-inch baking dish, sprinkle ground allspice lightly over the top, then bake, uncovered, in a hot oven (400\u00b0) for 40 to 45 minutes, just until mixture seems \"set\" in the middle and is lightly browned.
    Let stand at room temperature about 5 minutes before serving.
