Bread And Butter Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    5 c. vinegar
    5 c. white sugar
    1 tsp. celery seed
    1 Tbsp. mustard seed
    1/2 tsp. whole cloves
    1/4 tsp. powdered alum
    5 qt. pickles, sliced
    5 large onions, sliced
    1 c. salt
    water (to cover)
Preparation
    Soak pickles and onions in salt water 3 hours and then drain. (Use the 1 cup salt and water.)
    Make pickling mixture from the first six ingredients and pour over pickles and onion.
    Cook, bringing to boiling point.
    Pack in clean, hot jars and seal.
