Apple Dumplings - cooking recipe

1 c. sugar
1 c. water
1/8 tsp. cinnamon
1/8 tsp. nutmeg
2 drops red food coloring
6 whole apples, peeled and cored
2 c. enriched flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
2/3 c. shortening
1/2 c. milk
Preparation

Cook first 5 ingredients, bringing to a boil, then add butter. Sift flour, baking powder and salt.
Cut in shortening.
Add milk all at once and stir until moistened.
Roll 1/4-inch thick on lightly floured surface; cut into 6-inch squares.
