Ingredients

1 c. maple syrup
2/3 c. sour milk or buttermilk
2 eggs
1 Tbsp. vegetable shortening
about 4 c. sifted all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
vegetable oil (for deep-frying)
Preparation

In a large bowl, combine maple syrup, milk, eggs and shortening; beat well.
Add remaining ingredients, except oil; mix until a soft dough forms.
Turn dough out onto a floured surface and pat to 1/2-inch thickness.
Cut with doughnut cutter into rounds.
