Grandma Townsley'S Split Pea Soup - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. dried split peas
    1 1/2 qt. water
    ham shank or ham bone with meat
    1 medium onion, quartered
    2 carrots, grated
    1 bay leaf
    1 tsp. salt
    1/4 tsp. pepper
Preparation
    Soak peas overnight.
    Drain and add fresh water.
    Add all other ingredients and cook 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
    Add water, if necessary.
    Soup will be thick and creamy.
    Remove bay leaf before serving.
