Cherries 'N Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. sugar
    2 c. flour
    1/2 tsp. salt
    2 tsp. baking powder
    1/2 c. shortening
    1 c. milk
    1 tsp. vanilla or almond extract
    4 c. (two 1 lb. cans) drained cherries, juice reserved
    1 c. sugar
    2 c. hot cherry juice and water
Preparation
    Combine 1 cup sugar, flour, salt and baking powder in a large mixing bowl.
    Add shortening, milk and vanilla or almond extract. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes.
    Pour into greased 9 x 13-inch baking pan.
    Cover batter with drained cherries.
    Sprinkle 1 cup of sugar over cherries, then pour 2 cups of hot liquid over cherries. Bake in a preheated 375\u00b0 oven (350\u00b0 when using glass baking dish) about 40 minutes, covering with foil the last 15 minutes, if necessary, to prevent overbrowning.
    Serve warm with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
