Candy Cane Cookies - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. soft shortening (half butter)
    1 c. sifted confectioners sugar
    1 egg
    1 1/2 tsp. almond flavoring
    1 tsp. vanilla
    2 1/2 c. sifted flour
    1 tsp. salt
    1/2 tsp. red food coloring
Preparation
    Heat oven to 375\u00b0.
    Mix well shortening, sugar, egg and flavorings.
    Mix flour and salt; stir in.
    Divide dough in half. Blend red food coloring into one half.
    Roll 1 teaspoon each colored dough on a lightly floured board into a strip about 4-inches long.
    Place strips, side by side; press lightly together and twist like a rope.
    Curve top down the handle of cane.
    Bake 9 minutes or until lightly browned.
    Remove while still warm and sprinkle with 1/2 cup crushed peppermint candy.
