Black Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 lb. powdered sugar
    3/4 lb. butter
    1 lb. flour, brown or white
    12 eggs, separated
    2 lb. raisins
    2 lb. currants
    1/2 lb. citron, cut up
    1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
    1 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
    1 1/2 tsp. cloves
    6 oz. wine
    6 oz. brandy
    1 c. Orleans molasses
Preparation
    Rub butter and sugar together and add yolks of eggs.
    Add part of the flour and spices.
    Fold in whites of eggs, well beaten, then remainder of flour and wine and brandy.
    Mix all thoroughly.
    Cover bottom and sides of 4-quart milk pan with buttered white paper. Put in a layer of mixture, then a layer of fruit which has been dredged with flour, until pan is filled up to 3/4 inch.
    Bake 3 1/2 to 4 hours in slow oven.
