Bread-N-Butter Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    4 qt. sliced cucumbers
    1/2 c. salt
    ice cubes
    2 qt. sliced onions
    1 qt. vinegar
    4 c. sugar
    1 Tbsp. celery seed
    2 Tbsp. whole pickling spice
    4 Tbsp. mustard seed
    1 Tbsp. ground ginger
    1 tsp. turmeric (optional)
    1/2 tsp. white pepper (optional)
Preparation
    Gently stir salt into thinly sliced cucumbers.
    Cover with ice cubes.
    Let stand 2 or 3 hours or overnight.
    Add more ice if it melts; drain onions.
    Combine remaining ingredients and bring quickly to a boil; boil 10 minutes.
    Add cucumber and onion slices and bring to boiling point.
    Pack into hot jars.
    Adjust lids. Process in boiling water bath 30 minutes.
    Remove jars from canner and complete seals unless closures are self-sealing type.
    Makes 8 pints.
