1 pkg. dry yeast
1/4 c. very warm water
2 c. buttermilk
5 c. flour
1 Tbsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt (optional)
3 Tbsp. sugar
3/4 c. shortening
Preparation

Combine yeast and water in pre-warmed quart Mason jar.
Let stand 5 minutes.
Add to milk in a measuring cup; set aside.
