Spotted Dog - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    4 c. all-purpose flour
    1/2 tsp. each: salt and baking soda
    1 large egg, lightly beaten
    2 tsp. sugar
    1 1/4 c. buttermilk
    1/2 c. dried currants or raisins
Preparation
    Heat the oven to 450\u00b0.
    Grease a baking sheet.
    Put the flour, sugar, salt and baking soda in a large bowl.
    Make a well in the center and add the buttermilk and egg.
    Mix the flour into the liquid until a soft dough forms.
    Stir in the currants.
    Turn the dough onto a floured board and knead several times, then shape into a large ball.
    Transfer to the baking sheet.
    With a sharp knife, cut an \"x\" into the dough.
    Bake for 15 minutes.
    Reduce the oven temperature to 400\u00b0 and bake until the bread is cooked through, 30 minutes.
    Serve warm with butter.
