Raised Doughnuts - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 1/2 c. sugar
    1/2 c. shortening
    1 egg
    1 pkg. yeast
    flour
Preparation
    Cream together first 3 ingredients.
    Dissolve 1 package yeast in 1/4 cup warm water.
    Add yeast to creamed mixture.
    Add 2 cups warm water to mixture.
    Sift enough self-rising flour to make a stiff dough.
    Let rise 1 1/2 hours.
    Roll out on floured board; cut out and place on floured cookie sheets.
    Let rise 30 minutes. Fry in deep fat and drain on paper towels.
    Dust with powdered sugar while hot or glaze with a thin paste of powdered sugar, hot water and vanilla.
