Cherry Carnival - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 3/4 c. flour
    2 tsp. baking powder
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1/4 c. soft shortening
    1 c. sugar
    1 egg
    3/4 c. milk
    2 c. cut up, well drained, pitted sour cherries (No. 2 can, save juice)
    1/2 c. cut up nuts
    1/2 c. sugar
    2 Tbsp. cornstarch
    1 c. water
    3/4 c. juice (from cherries)
    1/4 tsp. almond flavoring
Preparation
    Sift together in bowl the first 3 ingredients.
    Add the soft shortening, 1 cup sugar, egg and milk.
    Blend in the cherries and nuts.
    Pour into greased and floured 9-inch square pan.
    Bake 30 to 40 minutes at 350\u00b0.
    Cut into 3-inch squares.
    Serve hot with clear red sauce.
