Ingredients

6 onions, sliced
6 to 8 Tbsp. butter
1 clove garlic, minced
1 tsp. sugar
3 to 4 Tbsp. flour
2 c. beef stock
2 c. chicken stock
1/4 c. dry white wine (optional)
1/2 lb. Swiss cheese, grated
slices dry French bread
Preparation

Saute onions in butter; add garlic.
Cover first 15 minutes to wilt onions.
Uncover and add sugar (sugar helps browning).
Cook until a nice brown color; during this period keep a careful watch and stir as needed.
Add flour and stir a few minutes.
Add stock and simmer.
Add wine last 15 minutes.
Serve by placing a dry or slightly toasted slice of French bread in bottom of bowl.
Add soup and top with cheese.
Place bowls on cookie sheet and bake in oven at 350\u00b0 until melted.
