Cucumber Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    2 gal. cucumbers, sliced
    1 pt. salt
    enough boiling water to cover cukes
    2 Tbsp. alum
    2 qt. vinegar
    8 pt. sugar
    handful pickling spices
    2 c. sugar
Preparation
    Add salt to sliced cucumbers and cover with boiling water. Let stand 4 days.
    Drain off salt water and add alum to boiling water.
    Let stand 24 hours.
    Drain.
    Rinse in cold water.
    Drain well.
    Make syrup of vinegar, sugar (8 pints) and pickling spices. Bring to a boil.
    Pour over cukes.
    Let stand overnight.
    Do this for 3 mornings.
    On the fourth day, boil syrup and add the 2 cups sugar.
    Pack cukes in jar.
    Add syrup and seal.
