Sauerbraten - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 1/4 c. red wine vinegar
    1 c. water
    1/2 c. red table or dessert wine
    4 medium onions, sliced
    1/4 c. brown sugar
    4 bay leaves
    whole cloves
    salt
    mustard seed
    peppercorns
    1 (4 lb.) beef chuck cross rib pot roast
    3 Tbsp. all-purpose flour
    2 Tbsp. salad oil
    potato pancakes (see recipe)
    1/2 c. fine gingersnap crumbs
    1/2 c. sour cream (optional)
Preparation
    For marinade, in large bowl, combine vinegar, water, wine, 3 of the sliced onions, brown sugar, bay leaves, 2 teaspoons cloves, 2 teaspoons salt, 1 teaspoon mustard seed and 1/2 teaspoon peppercorns.
