Ingredients

1/2 to 1 c. sugar
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. salt
1 1/2 c. soft bread crumbs
3 Tbsp. butter
3 c. sliced or chopped apples
1/4 c. water
juice and grated rind of 1 lemon
Preparation

Mix sugar, spices and salt.
If apples are very tart, use additional sugar (up to 1 cup).
Grease a 1 1/2-quart casserole. Put in 1/3 of the crumbs, then half of the apples.
Sprinkle with half of the sugar mixture.
Repeat.
Mix water, lemon juice and rind; pour over.
Put on remaining crumbs and dot with butter. Cover and bake in moderate oven (350\u00b0) for 1 3/4 hours.
Serves 6.
