Coconut Cream Cake - cooking recipe

2 c. sugar
1 stick margarine
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 c. buttermilk
2 c. coconut
1/2 c. shortening
5 eggs, separated (large)
1 tsp. baking soda
2 c. flour
1 c. chopped nuts
Preparation

Cream sugar, shortening and margarine.
Add egg yolks and vanilla; beat well.
Dissolve baking soda into buttermilk.
Sift flour; mix with coconut and nuts.
Add milk mixture alternately with flour mixture to sugar mixture, beating well after each addition.
Beat egg whites until stiff; fold into cake mixture. Bake in 3 well-greased and floured 9-inch cake pans for 30 minutes at 350\u00b0.
