Cherries 'N' Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. sugar
    2 c. flour
    1/2 tsp. salt
    2 tsp. baking powder
    1/2 c. shortening
    1 c. milk
    1 tsp. vanilla
    4 c. cherries, drained (two 16 oz. cans, reserve juice)
    1 c. sugar
    2 c. hot juice and water
Preparation
    Combine sugar, flour, salt and baking powder in large mixer bowl.
    Add shortening, milk and vanilla.
    Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes.
    Pour into greased and floured 9 x 13-inch pan.
    Cover with drained cherries.
    Sprinkle with 1 cup sugar, then pour on the 2 cups liquid.
    Bake at 350\u00b0 for 40 minutes.
    Cover with foil for last 15 minutes.
    Serve warm with ice cream or Cool Whip.
