Egg Custard Pie - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    2 eggs
    1/4 c. plus 2 Tbsp. sugar
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1 1/2 c. milk
    nutmeg
    1 (9-inch) pie crust, unbaked
Preparation
Examine sourwood blooms for dirt and insects. Remove leaves. Pack a 1-quart bowl full of blooms and pour 1 1/2 cups boiling water over them. Cover at once.
Let stand not over 1 minute. Drain and strain through a cloth. Add 1 1/2 cups sugar for each cup of water.
To 6 cups of the water after it has begun to thicken (after cooking slowly), add a small piece of alum about the size of a dime. Crush alum.
Thicken to desired texture, letting it boil down.
