Mommy'S Easter Bonnet Cake - cooking recipe

1 c. sugar
4 Tbsp. water
1/2 c. corn syrup (use Karo white syrup)
4 beaten egg whites
2 tsp. lemon extract
2 drops yellow food coloring
4 eggs
2 c. sugar
1 c. butter, softened
1/2 c. vegetable oil
2 c. cake flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. vanilla
2 oz. red food coloring

Preparation

In a large mixing bowl, combine the first five ingredients (eggs, sugar, butter, vegetable oil and vinegar).
Beat until smooth and creamy.
In another large bowl, sift together the cake flour and the baking soda.
Begin to alternate this flour mixture, alternating with buttermilk, to the beaten egg mixture, until all the flour and buttermilk have been blended to form the cake mixture.
Add the vanilla and red food coloring, beating until it is the same color throughout the mixture.
